Time (Post 9)

The hardest thing about song writing you ask? Finding time. Time that enables creativity with the energy to get something accomplished. I wonder how many unfinished songs exist simply because the right time was so hard to find or create. There comes a point in every song where it requires pushing through. As Paul McCarney says in an interview with NPR, “And then I just sit with it to work it out, like I’m writing an essay or doing a crossword puzzle.

So finding the time to work it out, is a necessary part of the process. Finding that right time, opens one self up to the creative process along with the ability to act. In the words of John Lennon while vacationing in Bermuda.

I was so centred after the experience at sea that I was tuned in, or whatever, to the cosmos. And all these songs came! The time there was amazing … [I was] there on the beach taping songs … just playing guitar and singing. We were just in the sun and these songs were coming out.

For me, plane rides provide a great space for working on music. I have dedicated time, there are few life distractions. So here I am iPad in hand, with a goal to push through the lyrics on Raos. Over the course of two hours, I argue with myself over word choice, phrasing, verse order, and song structure culminating in the version of lyrics I will take into recording.

For those who accompanied me on the this journey, it was my pleasure to share. I do hope you enjoy the final lyrics, my take on song noir, a flashback to the late 1930s, a night at Raos, and the time with Al, the Thin Man, Vito and Ms. Eklair. In a short while, I will blog on the recording of this song.
